Caution & Warnings
- NEVER ADMINISTER INTRATHECALLY: Intrathecal administration of vincristine is fatal. Extreme caution must be exercised to ensure it is administered only intravenously.
- Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy (tingling, numbness, pain in hands/feet) and autonomic neuropathy (constipation, paralytic ileus, orthostatic hypotension) are common and dose-limiting side effects. Monitor patients closely for symptoms.
- Myelosuppression: Bone marrow suppression can occur, leading to decreased white blood cell count (leukopenia), red blood cell count (anemia), and platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Regular blood counts are required.
- Extravasation Risk: If the solution leaks out of the vein, it can cause severe tissue damage. Prompt action is needed if extravasation occurs.
- Hepatic Impairment: Dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with liver dysfunction.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Vincristine is contraindicated in pregnant and breastfeeding women due to its genotoxic and teratogenic potential.
