Halaven is indicated for the treatment of:- Metastatic breast cancer in patients who have previously received at least two chemotherapeutic regimens for metastatic disease, including an anthracycline and a taxane.
- Unresectable or metastatic liposarcoma in patients who have received prior chemotherapy containing an anthracycline.
How to Use
Halaven should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional experienced in the use of antineoplastic agents.- The recommended dose of Halaven is 1.23 mg/m2 administered intravenously over 2 to 5 minutes.
- It is typically given on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle.
- Treatment should be continued as long as a clinical benefit is observed or until unacceptable toxicity occurs.
- Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on individual patient response, liver or kidney function, and the presence of adverse reactions, as determined by the treating physician.
- Prior to each dose, patients should undergo blood tests to monitor blood cell counts.
Caution & Warnings
- Neutropenia: Halaven can cause severe neutropenia, which may lead to serious infections. Patients should be monitored closely for signs of infection and have regular blood counts.
- Peripheral Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is a common adverse effect, which can be severe. Patients should be monitored for new or worsening neuropathy.
- QT Prolongation: Halaven may cause QT interval prolongation. Caution is advised in patients with congenital long QT syndrome, congestive heart failure, bradyarrhythmias, or electrolyte abnormalities.
- Embryo-Fetal Toxicity: Halaven can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 2 months after the last dose.
- Hepatotoxicity: Liver function should be monitored, especially in patients with pre-existing hepatic impairment.
- Renal Impairment: Dose reduction may be required in patients with moderate or severe renal impairment.
- Avoid concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors without physician consultation.
